Location Moomba Park Primary School was established in 1961 on a large site in Fawkner, a northern suburb of Melbourne. It serves an economically, socially and culturally diverse community. Traditionally largely Greek and Italian families are now being replaced by families from Middle Eastern, Asian and South Sea Island backgrounds. Moomba Park P.S. draws students from other areas beyond Fawkner. Our school enjoys a very good reputation in the community providing an education that caters for the varying needs of all of our students in a stimulating and safe environment. Demographics Enrolments over the Charter period have remained fairly steady at around 350. Mobility at the school, however, is quite high with, on average, only about half the Prep intake being at the school in Year 6. Over the past three years, the proportion of students in receipt of EMA has decreased by 3 % to 57%; the proportion of LBOTE students has increased by 8% to 50%. The school remains firmly in the Like School 9 category. The school is structured in teams. Composite grades represent the major form of year level organization and although there might be slight variations on a yearly basis we attempt to keep these classes within CSF Levels. We place an emphasis on teamwork. Our skilled, enthusiastic and caring staff employ a range of innovative and proven teaching practices. Our students are encouraged to take an active role in their learning. This provides the best possible learning environment allowing our students to work towards their personal best. Our school's overall curriculum follows a developmentally sequenced plan, from prep to year 6, across the eight key learning areas. A clear focus of the school is on improving literacy and numeracy through our Teaching and Learning Priority. This brings together a number of approaches that underpin improvement in student learning, featuring aspects of the Thinking Curriculum, the Quality in Schools Project and an inquiry approach integrating the remaining Key Learning Areas. Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is an integral tool within the school and classroom programs. Students are also able to access the well resourced learning technology centre through regularly timetabled sessions. We offer a comprehensive specialist program covering Art, Physical Education, Lote [Italian], Swimming, Music [Prep-Yr.2], Drama [Yrs.3-6], Library and Maths Task sessions. For a number of years now we have provided a range of lunchtime electives for all year levels. This reinforces the positive sense of engagement within our school. Our Intervention and Extension Programs cater for the diversity within our student group. A strong emphasis is placed on providing additional assistance or further challenges when these are required. Reading Recovery is a key program in the Early Years Literacy program. Our intervention program utilizes the skills of our teaching and learning support staff operating under the guidance of our assistant principal. A key focus here is catering for students with common learning needs in small group or in individual situations. These programs are continually evolving responding to the needs and the special abilities of our students. Other Significant Factors Our People The education process is considered to be a team effort with parents, school staff and children working co-operatively to ensure that all students receive full support in their learning efforts. Groups such as the School Council and its Sub-Committees and the Parents Association, all contribute to the team-building process and provide valuable input into all aspects of school life. Moomba Park Primary School encourages an 'open door' approach where parent and community contribution and participation are valued. In addition school based activities such as performances, inter-school sport, fundraising activities and special events are proving an effective means of maintaining informal, but important communication between parents and teachers. Our Facilities Our school grounds offer relaxing and landscaped perspectives; these include an oval, with extensive adventure playground equipment and several play areas catering for all students. Our air-conditioned school has an extensive range of facilities to enhance the total school environment for students such as a heated indoor swimming pool, assembly hall and a computer lab. We also have wheel chair access to all buildings. The latter demonstrates a variety of resources that support the school programs.
